President Andrés Manuel López Obrador led the Flag Day ceremony this Saturday, February 24, in the port of Mazatlán, in Sinaloa.
At the civic event, General Luis Cresencio Sandoval, head of the Secretariat of National Defense, expressed that the flag is a symbol of unity and that it should serve as inspiration to continue giving our best effort in the construction of the Mexico that we will leave to the new generations.
“If something characterizes us as Mexicans, it is the love of our country, the sense of belonging to our land, respect for our national symbols and the desire for progress and well-being,” he said.
This commemoration serves to promote national identity and patriotism around our flag, highlighted the general secretary, which in the face of adversity, gives us courage, protects us and unites us.
At the event, López Obrador sworn in 692 bodyguards representing the 32 states.
“I come to entrust this flag to your patriotism, which symbolizes your independence, your honor, your institutions and the integrity of your territory,” said the supreme commander of the Armed Forces.
The Secretary of National Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, said that the history of national symbols is the history of Mexico itself, which is why celebrating Flag Day has always had a special meaning for Mexicans.
He pointed out that the creation of the national flag represents, in the Flag of the Army of the Three Guarantees, what it means the union of insurgents and royalists, giving viability to the consummation of the independence of Mexico in 1821.
Furthermore, the flag, its essence, since the birth of Mexico as an independent nation, has been to give identity to the country among the other nations of the world.
The national flag represents the efforts and struggles of many Mexicans whom it has accompanied in historical events that have defined the course of the country in defending the integrity, independence and sovereignty of Mexico.
“And fourth, in addition to being one of the most beautiful in the world, our national emblem represents our implicit origins, customs and traditions; unity and patriotism, as well as the strengthening of the national collective,” he stressed.
Governor Rubén Rocha highlighted that for the first time an event of this level is being held in Sinaloa, headed by the President of the Republic, to honor the Flag.
We Mexicans find our deepest unity in our national symbols, the Sinaloan president said in his message.
In addition, he attacked American journalists, after the publication of reports linking the chief executive to organized crime, in ProPublica and The New York Times.
