58 Central American migrants allegedly died in Mexico after the truck they were hiding in crashed into a wall and overturned in the southern state of Chiapas. This was announced by a source in the local prosecutor’s office. The injured are 73, while another 24 people were left unharmed. Among the injured there is an unknown number of minors. Chiapas, which borders Guatemala, is a major transit area for illegal migrants attempting to reach the United States.
107 migrants were traveling on board the truck, mostly from Guatemala and El Salvador. According to some witnesses, the driver took the corner at excessive speed. Luis Manuel Garcia Moreno, head of Chiapas Civil Protection, defined the accident, which took place at 3.30 pm local time in correspondence of a curve, one of the most serious tragedies of this type in the country.
Mexico this year is at the center of a serious migratory crisis, crossed by thousands of people, most of them Central American or Haitian, determined to reach the United States. The authorities intercepted 228,115 and deported 82,627 between January and October, numbers that have not been seen for over 15 years.
Furthermore, 123,000 migrants asked for refuge in the first 11 months of 2021, another absolute record, considering that in previous years the requests were around 40,000. The Mexican government has received criticism for its treatment of migrants and has deployed tens of thousands of military units to the north and south borders to step up controls, as part of its cooperation with the United States on Mexican immigration.
