More than 3,500 kilograms of explosives were used to demolish the towers, after the Supreme Court ruled that the buildings were constructed in violation of standards.
The two towers became the tallest buildings to be demolished in India.
More than 1,500 families evacuated their homes in the area more than seven hours before the collapse of the twin towers, which are about 100 meters high in Noida district, on the outskirts of New Delhi.
The towers were 32 and 29 storeys high, built by a private construction company, and were not yet inhabited by anyone.
In addition, Ritu Maheshwari, a local government official, said, “All is well to a large extent, the demolition carried out as expected.”
The demolition was completed within seconds, but came after a 12-year legal battle between the area’s residents and construction company Supertech Limited.
The demolition of the towers occurred after the Supreme Court concluded that the construction company, in collusion with government officials, had violated laws prohibiting construction at a certain distance from adjacent buildings.
The Supreme Court said the construction of the two towers was also illegal because the building did not receive mandatory approval from the owners of other apartments in the area.
Residents are expected to return to the area on Sunday evening after experts examine the impact of the demolition.
Some apartments are located only nine meters from the site of the explosion, while the required security distance is twenty meters.
The towers were brought down by Edifice Engineering, in association with South Africa’s Jet Demolition, at a cost of 180 million rupees (US$2.25 million).
