‘Dust they shall be’, the production by Carlos Marqués-Marce with which the Valladolid International Film Week opened its 69th edition this Friday – this year the festival will have one more day – shared the spotlight this morning with ‘The New Years’, the latest series for Movistar Plus+ by Rodrigo Sorogoyenwho had already worked with this platform in ‘Antidisturbios’, signs with two other co-directors: Sandra Romero and David Martín de los Santos. «Although it is a series, we have conceived it as a cinematographic work and we are going to take it to cinemas. “It is a very pleasant surprise that its national premiere was here, at the Seminci,” said the filmmaker at the beginning of the press conference for the presentation of this work with a script that, as he said, they worked on “for many years.” years”.
Live “that immersive experience of ten years in the life of a couple” It was the starting point of this work in which “the fantastic genre sneaks in through a crack,” as explained by the director of Seminci, José Luis Cienfuegos. For the filmmaker, each of the ten chapters had “a sufficiently different color to make it special” was essential. “In essence, there are ten moments of these two characters on each New Year’s Eve, and there was a great risk that they would look quite similar to each other,” he explained during his presentation at Seminci, where the production had its national premiere. The contribution of the protagonist couple was also important: Francesco Carril and Iria del Río, who he said have been “almost scriptwriters and the soul of the series.” “We don’t tell big stories, or maybe we do,” he reflected, then considering that this work “is the biggest thing” he has done to date “because there are ten chapters,” something that was very clear to him from the beginning.
As he has confessed, work on the series began with another platform, which gave up on the project. It was then that his production company, Caballo Films, contacted Movistar.
For Francesco Carril, who plays Oscar, The “degree of intimacy” that can be seen in the series “comes a lot from Rui’s way of working”: «He begins to share with you many things about the series that not only have to do with your own work as an actor, but with certain aesthetic and artistic decisions (…) Sharing his own vision as a filmmaker makes you feel part of what you are doing, something that does not always happen that way and that is important, because many times as actors it seems that we are there only for our job, but when you feel part of something, you feel the project as part of you, and that for me was a starting signal to see this is a space in which we can put and share everything. We have talked a lot about our experiences, our own history, and that has helped many of the things that happen there to happen,” he explained.
Something that her co-star, Iria del Rio, who plays Ana, agreed on, adding that Sorogoyen “has a very brutal commitment to verisimilitude” and that makes “things make sense and coherence.”
During the press conference they also referred to the importance of music, which is very integrated into the story, something that they kept in mind “from the beginning”: “Many of the songs that come out, whether diegetic or extradiegetic, were written in script. “It was something conceived from the production design itself, and it was almost obligatory,” he added, using as an example the music of Silvia Pérez Cruz in chapter 8. In this sense, the producer Fran Araújo has thanked the good disposition they have found for part of the musicians.
