Still with victims bodies on the Potomac River, Donald Trump served this Thursday from the Washington air accident tragedy to sign up somewhat politic Democrats … in the hiring of air controllers. In the first major crisis of his second term, he made clear his manual: finding guilty that give political revenue.
So far, nothing indicates that some hiring policy has to do with the accident. The National Transportation Council, which leads research, argues that it is early to know for sure the causes. When Trump spoke from the White House about the accident, for example, the black box of the plane had not yet been recovered against which a military helicopter crashed. The first revelations, however, suggest that an air controller was doing two jobs at the same time: supervise aircraft and helicopter flights. That is, they point to a lack of resources, which could have an impact on mass cuts plans on the federal government that Trump and his great ally, Elon Musk, pursue.
But Trump opted to blame of the Policies ofi, which have gained an excessive prominence in the US in recent years, not only in the government and in non -profit institutions, but also in large companies. And that they have been one of his great battle horses since he arrived at the White House.
“We don’t know,” Trump replied when asked specifically if the accident had been caused by Dei, but immediately later slid: “It could have been. We had much higher standards than any other ».
Trump condemned Barack Obama and Joe Biden for his “great commitment to include diversity”, something that has weakened, in his opinion, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
“I changed the Obama standards, they went from being mediocre, at most, to extraordinary,” Trump said in the press conference on diversity policies that his predecessor introduced in 2013, at the beginning of his second term. Then, a new hiring system was established to try to attract very little represented in minorities.
“In my first term, my administration raised the standards to get the highest standards of security and excellence,” Trump said. It is something that he had also defended in one of the first orders that signed as soon as he arrived at the White House, to banish aviation policies.
Speech falsehoods
But it is false: Trump did not change the hiring standards in his first mandate, despite the criticism that Obama’s decision to include issues of diversity in hiring in some sectors, the New York billionaire let them be. And even in Trump’s FAA he opted for the hiring of people with disabilities, one of the great criticism Trump has made after the accident.
“Hearing, vision, lack of limbs, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism,” Trump recited on disabilities that in his opinion should not take place in aviation.
But an analysis of ‘The Washington Post’ shows that FAA, during Trump’s first mandate, began a hiring program taking into account those same disabilities. In a 2019 ad, with the title ‘FAA provides races in aviation to people with disabilities’, the same disabilities were listed from which he spoke at a press conference. That announcement is now eliminated from the FAA website, just like the program by which people with certain disabilities were facilities to “acquire knowledge and experience as a student of air traffic controller.”
Beyond the disabilities, a foundation sued Trump’s FAA in 2019 for the hiring standards that discriminated in favor of racial minorities, which came from Obama and that he did not change in his first mandate.
«We want the most competent people. It doesn’t matter what race they are, ”Trump said now at his press conference. “If they do not have a great brain, a brain of great power, they will not be very good in what they do and bad things will happen.” Against what he said in full national shock for the accident, he did not make those changes in his first adventure as president.
