That ofmuscle fatigue a feeling that everyone experiences sooner or later in life. In most cases, this phenomenon associated with physical and multifactorial activity depends onthe type of exercise, by the muscles used, by the muscle fibers involved as well as by the duration of the training. Some measures can help prevent it or make it clear more quickly.
What causes muscle fatigue?
Muscle fatigue il alarm bell which indicates that we are entering “reserve” and manifests itself in the form of a decline in performance and an increased perception of effort – he explains Gianfranco Beltrami, specialist in Sports Medicine and National Vice President of the Italian Sports Medical Federation -. In general, central and peripheral fatigue can be distinguished. There peripheral fatigue is perceived with soreness of the muscles, muscle aches and sometimes feeling nauseous. The muscle is no longer able to contract as before and the causes are different. In the past it was thought that this resulted from a lower availability of glycogen (energy). Recent studies have shown that fatigue arises before the exhaustion of metabolic stocks and in this sense it would represent a physiological mechanism aimed at preventing muscle exhaustion and consequently also possible injuries. The factors involved are diverse, from acidosis to a decrease in calcium production.
What is meant by central fatigue?
The central effort starts from the mind and reaches the periphery. It feels like one feeling of exhaustion which reduces the desire to continue exercising and makes us understand that we no longer have the energy to go on. Various hypotheses have been formulated to explain it. Certain central mediators such as dopamine, serotonin, cortisol and testosterone certainly play an important role. Central fatigue can also manifest itself in the form of a lesser ability to decide what is the most suitable thing to do and this could lead to injury, leading the athlete to go too far.
