Copies of Soviet MiG-19 fighters in China were turned into drones. Pictures of the converted Shenyang J-6 aircraft were published in the account of the Eastern Zone of the Military Command of the People’s Liberation Army of China. About it informs Defense News.
The publication cites a satellite image that shows 50 J-6 unmanned aircraft at the Lianchen airbase. Also, unmanned aircraft are located at the Yantan-li base. Manned versions of the J-6 were retired from service in 2010.
Another snapshot of an unmanned aircraft based on a Soviet design was published on the official account of the PLA Eastern Theater of War Command on the Weibo social network. The photo was taken during the opening ceremony for a new training cycle in an unnamed section.
Defense News notes that the manned versions of the J-6 were withdrawn from service in 2010, and in 2013 there were reports of work on unmanned versions of the aircraft. The author of the material suggested that unmanned aircraft could be prepared for massive raids in order to deplete the enemy’s air defense system.
China received documentation for the production of the J-6 in the late 1950s. The aircraft was produced until 1981, and the aircraft was in service with the PLA Air Force until 2010. The J-6 fighter is armed with three 30 mm HP-30 cannons. Also, the aircraft can carry bombs and missiles on the external hardpoints.
In September, a drone with daily autonomy was presented in China. The CH-6 drone received economical turbofan engines, which allows it to stay aloft for about 20 hours. The drone can reach speeds of up to 700 kilometers per hour.
