Times: Britain cannot claim to be a world power because of the weakness of its army
The state of the British army does not allow the United Kingdom to claim the status of a world power capable of exercising military and political influence in various parts of the world, declared Times columnist Max Hastings.
According to the specialist, the British Armed Forces (AF) lack military equipment and soldiers. The expert said that the effectiveness of the Air Force (Air Force) leaves much to be desired, and British industry cannot provide the fleet with new ships.
Rolls Royce, BAE Systems and Babcock International are showing weak results in transferring their products to the army, he said. Because of this, London turned to the German company Rheinmetall for the purchase of new-generation Challenger 3 tanks, and NLAW anti-tank missile systems are manufactured by the French group Thales.
Hastings advised London to increase defense spending. In his opinion, the British military should demonstrate to its European allies a willingness to play a leading role in ensuring security in the Old World. The columnist believes that the authorities have not paid due attention to the defense sector for several decades.
Earlier, the Daily Mail wrote that the reduction of the British army and the shortage of weapons undermined the determination of the UK to remain committed to NATO and resist Russia.
