The State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus spoke about a group of people detained for preparing to disrupt a referendum on an updated constitution. This is reported TASS with reference to the head of the KGB investigative department Konstantin Bychek.
According to him, the group acted under the guidance of foreign curators. They are also detained. Members of the group called for spoiling ballots and intimidating members of election commissions – threatening letters were sent to them on behalf of policemen and judges.
Their actions were qualified as obstruction by the citizens of Belarus of their constitutional right to participate in the life of society.
The referendum on changes to the Constitution will be held on 27 February. The Central Election Commission of Belarus decided to classify the names of members of precinct election commissions.
On August 9, 2020, presidential elections were held in Belarus. According to official figures, Alexander Lukashenko, who has been ruling since 1994, won 80 percent of the vote. Massive protests continued across the country for several months. Against this background, Lukashenko announced the need to change the fundamental law of the country. According to the draft amendments, the same person can hold the presidency for no more than two terms. But the restriction will take effect after the newly elected head of state takes office. That is, Lukashenka, in case of victory in the next elections, will be able to rule for two more terms.
