Withinl World Language Therapist Day, commemorated on June 8the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) urgently calls on society to raise awareness about the importance of continuous health care, especially as it relates to effective communication.
The objective is to prevent language disorders that can occur at any stage of life.according to Óscar David Jiménez Chávez, speech therapist assigned to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center Unit (UMFyRC) of the IMSS.
Jiménez Chávez highlighted that Speech therapy is crucial to treat oral or written communication difficulties that may arise throughout life due to congenital or acquired conditions.. These problems affect the structure and function of the organs involved in human communication, including difficulties in language acquisition, articulation of sounds (phonemes), speech disorders, sound production problems and others.
Speech therapy, explained Jiménez Chávez, uses a variety of methods, techniques and exercises to enable and rehabilitate patients, adapting to their age, level of maturity, hearing, education and the integrity of the speech apparatus. These treatments also consider emotional, cognitive, perceptual and psychomotor aspects. In cases of neurological pathologies, the success of therapy is based on the plasticity of the nervous system.
The speech therapist stressed the need to have a balanced diet and exercise regularly, not only to maintain physical health, but also to improve cognitive and communicative function. These recommendations are part of the IMSS strategy for early detection and timely intervention in language problems.
For girls and boys, Jiménez Chávez recommended creating an environment rich in linguistic stimuli, where they are encouraged to express themselves and are actively listened to. Parents and caregivers should be attentive to language development and seek professional advice for any signs of difficulty.
“If you identify that your boy or girl is not developing at the rate of other children of his or her age and has difficulties pronouncing words, organizing his or her ideas or formulating short sentences, it is advisable that you go to your medical unit for an evaluation and possible referral to a specialist in human communication,” he emphasized.
Among the most common disorders treated in the physical medicine and rehabilitation services of the IMSS are alterations in language, speech, voice, hearing, learning and cognitive problems. In adults, these can be a consequence of cerebral vascular events (CVE), aphasias, dysphasias and dysarthrias, among others. Jiménez Chávez also mentioned the care for laryngectomized patients and those with total or partial thyroidectomy, as well as those who underwent endotracheal intubation during the pandemic and present voice disorders.
Jiménez Chávez highlighted that IMSS speech therapists play a fundamental role in the development of language and communication in children, addressing a wide range of disorders that affect their quality of life and facilitating their integration into daily activities. These professionals are also essential in the treatment of specific problems such as dysorthographies, dyscalculia, dyslexia and dysphemia or stuttering.
