The black bear, which weighs close to 230 kilograms, roams the streets of the Tahoe Keys in South Lake Tahoe, about 100 miles east of Sacramento, without officials being able to catch it.
And the California Department of Fish and Wildlife explained, in a blog published Thursday, that the animal caused severe damage to 33 properties, and broke into 28 homes, within 7 months.
At the same time, she noted, “Fortunately, the bear did not attack humans or pets in the area.”
Management spokesman Peter Terra told the network CNN, the American news: “The accidents occurred mainly during the summer and fall of 2021, when the bear was overeating, increasing its calories to survive the winter.”
And overeating, according to the US National Park Service, causes bears to eat and drink almost nonstop during the fall, in preparation for hibernation..
The administration indicated that this bear “has lost its fear of people and associates them with obtaining food, and its large size helps it to break into homes, where it can penetrate front doors and garage doors.”.
She advised residents in the Tahoe Keys to remain vigil and dispose of food responsibly, because bears are “driven by smell”.
