Filippo Turetta also talks about the moment of his arrest, stating that he was captured near a highway in Germany.
The Cecchettin case has been brought back into the discussion, mainly due to the start of the trial for Philip Turettaguilty of the murder of the young Giulia. Today is also the day of publication of the letter that contains his version of the facts and that is addressed to his parents.
Filippo Turetta was arrested after a brief escape to Germany for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin. The brutal murder took place on November 11, 2023, just under a year ago.
After all this time, the young man in prison has written a text that exudes shame and horror for what he has done. In fact, the text never mentions Giulia’s name. An excerpt from the letter of the young man published in full in the ‘Corriere della Sera’:
I am not a bad person, but I do not deserve forgiveness. I even attempted suicide, but without success. […] I never thought this would become so well known.
On September 23rd, yesterday, the lightning process against the 22-year-old confessed. The choice of the immediate trial should lead to the sentence by December 3. This is why the expression “fast track trial” is used in journalistic cases like these. The defense chose to avoid a media trial, maintaining a low profile. In fact, they also avoided having Filippo Turetta appear in court at the first session in court.
Filippo Turetta tells in the letter the moment of arrestclaiming to have been captured near a highway in Germany. For him, those were moments of surrender after “failed attempts to commit suicide.” The text conveys all the fear and despair of a boy in prison, a murderer who fears the judgment of the authorities and, who knows, perhaps of the entire world, in his eyes.
I have generated so much hatred and anger, and I deserve it… but it is all terrible. […] I will spend most of my life in a small cell, alone. The best phases of normal people’s lives will pass me by, while I will see my hair fall out in prison. […] I won’t be able to finish my studies or meet new people. My friends will forget me forever.
From Germany, where he is being held, the 22-year-old apologizes for what happened. Filippo Turetta declares: “I didn’t want it to happen”. remorse it is evident, even if it is difficult to read certain words especially after the dozens of stab wounds given to the young Giulia Cecchettin. The young man speaks of forgiveness and, therefore, also to his parents:
I just wish I could take it back. There is no forgiveness for what I did, and I don’t want it. I ruined too many people’s lives without thinking. […] I hope no one will judge you for what I did. I would understand if you decided to forget me and deny me as a son. I have caused you too much pain.
The process It ended in six hours without Turetta’s presence, with the victim’s father, Gino Cecchettin, expressing confidence in the judicial system. Filippo Turetta will be present in court between October 25 and 28 to answer the judges, while the final discussion is scheduled for November. Elena Cecchettin’s lawyer, Nicodemo Gentile, announced that Giulia’s father will ask for compensation of one million euros.
