Illa points to campsites as one of the priorities to review in flood zones

The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, announced a review of activities in the flood zone in Catalonia after the tragedy in Valencia. Although until now they have limited themselves to stating that they will study all cases, this Monday they have pointed to one of the sectors most exposed to floods: campsites.

“There are campsites that concern us and we are working on them,” said the president in an interview on Catalunya Ràdio. Illa did not want to say whether the actions will entail the dismantling of some of these facilities or their adaptation, but he assured: “If the activities do not offer guarantees, decisions will have to be made.”

“There are some activities that we already know are in a situation that does not correspond and we have to see, from an administrative and legal point of view, what needs to be done,” Illa insisted. Regarding the urban projects underway in Catalonia, some of which are in floodable areas, the president has defended that strict regulations are complied with.

Given the warning from the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) of the arrival of a new dana this week, Illa has called on citizens not to be “fear” but to “respect” the climate. “We cannot live in fear and anguish, but we can live with respect for the situation and pay close attention to the warnings that may be given by the Civil Protection services,” the president indicated.

Likewise, he has pointed out that the population must get used to the civil protection notices on the climate and follow the recommendations. “People have the right to know the forecast of what may happen to take precautions. The training and self-protection aspect also needs to be greatly improved. If there are warnings of heavy rain, do not park in the stream,” he noted.
