Illa agrees with Sánchez on more resources for the courts in a new plan against multiple recidivism

Salvador Illa has shown in his first 100 days as president that street crime is one of the areas that arouses the greatest interest. This Friday, after his meeting with President Pedro Sánchez at the Moncloa, the president of the Generalitat came out with a commitment from the central government to work on a new plan against multiple recidivism that will include more resources for the Catalan courts.

“We suffer from congestion in the courts that prevents us from acting against multiple criminal recidivism,” said Illa. To this end, he announced, starting in December they will launch a joint “shock plan” between the Ministry of Justice and the counterpart Department of the Generalitat, which will involve an injection of resources.

The objective of both governments is to expedite rapid trials to significantly reduce the cases pending in court. The plan does not have more details at the moment, although Illa has assured that the specific measures will be announced starting in December.

Along the same lines, Sánchez and Illa have agreed to reconvene the four bilateral commissions provided for by the Statute. Illa has assured that among the matters that he wishes to energize in these joint bodies is the problem of housing, as well as some details linked to the financing of public services, on which both administrations work.

“When Catalonia improves, Spain improves,” assured Illa, who considered that there are “many areas of self-government that can be deployed” within the Catalan Statute.

As explained by Illa, the four commissions will be held in the first quarter of 2025, after some of them have not been convened during the last two years. “There is enough margin for the departments to fill the agendas,” explained the president.

At the same meeting, the heads of the Government and the Generalitat discussed investments in the technological field and, specifically, the chip or semiconductor industry. A “strategic area for Europe,” Illa highlighted, and one that “Catalonia and Spain want to lead.”

The president has mentioned Innofab, a chip pre-production plant that plans to open in 2026 in Cerdanyola del Vallès and that Illa has assured that it will continue to have the public boost it needs, after it was a bet by the previous Pere Government. Aragonese.

The strategy with Innofab is to improve the entire existing network in Catalonia regarding semiconductors, from the issue of design and research to the manufacturing of prototypes. Although the head of the Government has not given specific figures for direct public investment, he has assured that the project will mobilize 392 million euros.

“Catalonia is one of the main drivers of Spain’s technological commitment. We add talent, we have the most cutting-edge research centers, infrastructures such as Synchrotron ALBA and Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputacion (BSC-CNS), as well as we have leading companies and universities in this matter,” Illa highlighted.
