As has been rumored for a few days now, the Bathurst 12h will be moved a few months compared to expected.
The first race of the Intercontinental GT Challenge was supposed to take place on the weekend of February 25-27, but the increase in cases of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant in New South Wales prompted organizers to review plans.
Fortunately, SRO Motorsports and Supercars managed to avoid the cancellation, which would have been the second in a row for the event at the legendary Mount Panorama, rescheduling everything for 13-15 May, also to avoid coinciding with other series (such as WEC and IMSA).
“It was imperative that we return to Bathurst this year and the new May date ensures that the race can take place without any Omicron restrictions,” said Stéphane Ratel, IGTC promoter.
“I thank the Supercars colleagues for the effort to find an alternative weekend during their busy national calendar and for their overall efforts to stage the race.”
Shane Howard, CEO of Supercars, added: “This is the best result for the event under the current circumstances and the new date eases the pressure on international competitors and transport workers, as well as commissioners, officials and volunteers who perform. a critical role in the success of the event every year “.
“We have worked closely with Destination NSW, SRO Motorsports Group, Bathurst Regional Council, Motorsport Australia, Australian Racing Group and our broadcasters to ensure this date ensures the best results for all involved.”
“As we have seen, a number of high profile teams have already committed to participating and we look forward to other international competitors to announce their plans ahead of the new May date.”
“This is a win for fans who have wanted to see this event return to the Australian motorsport calendar for two years.”
