Germany’s Ifo institute says the Economic Experts Survey (EES) showed the country “substantially less attractive as a business location over the last ten years”. Ifo says that professors from universities in Germany gave the country a score of 3.4, on a scale of 1 to 6, as a business location in an international comparison. The survey carried out in mid-April showed that 22% of participants expressed a positive perception of the country as a place for business.
Among the positive points, the good training of the workforce, the strong research base, legal security and the continued innovation of the companies were highlighted. The stable political conditions and institutional framework were also mentioned.
On the other hand, negative factors emerged in the research as excessive bureaucracy, lack of public investment, lack of highly trained workers, high energy prices and inadequate cloud digitalization, in the opinion of some of the interviewees.
Among those who gave the country the worst marks in the survey, high taxes, bureaucracy, energy costs, low investment and digitalization still at a slow pace were also cited, as well as challenges with the aging of the population, in demographics.
