The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), said on the afternoon of this Friday, the 24th, that if the sugarcane bagasse has a “taste of alcohol, it is actually good”. The speech was given at an event in Guariba (SP), at the inauguration ceremony of Raízen’s second generation ethanol plant.
“I’m going to visit a pile of bagasse, which used to be thrown away. A little of that bagasse was used to mix into animal feed. I don’t even know if the cow liked it, but I know it mixed. I didn’t put it in my mouth, I don’t know if it’s good. If it has a taste of alcohol, that’s good,” she says.
Lula’s speech refers to the sugar cane cycle. Currently, this plant generates products such as cachaça, alcohol and sugar. Bagasse, which was previously discarded, is used as biomass to generate energy.
The President of the Republic emphasizes that previously the bagasse was used for other purposes due to lack of knowledge, as fuel for burning in plantations to ward off venomous animals, for example. It was from sugarcane that, during the oil crisis in the 70s, it was possible to withdraw Proálcool.
“I keep realizing that our engineering, that our researchers, managed to do what no country in the world that thinks they are better than us has done. We can transform that bagasse into something that produces much better quality Ethanol than the Ethanol we produced before, which is second generation Ethanol”, he explains.
He also questions “which country has this?”, arguing that other nations have other “things” that Brazil may not have, but that it is necessary to value what is available in the national territory.
Lula also highlights the need for the global energy transition, arguing that Brazil has the potential to be at the forefront of the cause.
“Nature is manifesting itself in several countries and global warming is true. And which country has the possibility of decarbonizing the planet more than us?, he says.
Raízen opens factory that produces second generation ethanol
With an investment of R$ 1.2 billion and a capacity of 82 million liters per year, the factory inaugurated this Friday advances in the production of second generation ethanol, which is made with waste from the manufacture of common ethanol, the called first generation.
Located in the Bonfim Bioenergy Park, in Guariba (SP), the plant has 80% of the production capacity already contracted.
