Hockey|IIHF distributes ranking points to Russia, even though it does not play in prestigious competitions.
International The IIHF updated men’s world ranking after the World Cup tournament that ended on Sunday.
Canada remained at the top of the list, but the following places will make the viewer rub their eyes.
Russia, banned from the World Cup until spring 2022, rose to second place in the world rankings, overtaking the Lions.
The IIHF has given Russia the number of points to be awarded annually to the World Cup bronze medalist country. Thanks to that, Russia is now approaching Canada in the ranking points, which was fourth in the Czech Republic.
If Canada won’t win a medal at next year’s World Cup tournament, Russia will rise to the top of the ranking.
Russia will rise to 4,190 points next spring, while Canada would be ten points away in the second fourth place.
At the same time as Russia, Belarus, which was excluded from the World Cup, has not been awarded points as princely. It has received points for 18th place from every missed race and is ranked 16th.
The Czech Republic, which won the World Championship gold, rose four places to fourth, and silver-winning Switzerland two places to fifth.
Austria, which performed excellently in the background, improved its ranking by three places and is now 13th.
IIHF banned Russia and Belarus in February 2022 from their value tournaments because Russia started its war of aggression against Ukraine. The IIHF decides on the participation rights of Russia and Belarus each year.
The next decision will be in February next year.
IIHF President Luc Tardiff stated on Sunday in connection with the World Cup that the date of Russia’s return is uncertain. The decision on Russia’s participation in the February 2026 Olympic tournament will be made later.
“We will make a decision next February, as we always do. It doesn’t matter what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decides. This is how we have acted before, and we have not waited for the Olympic Committee’s decision, although of course we talked with them,” said Tardif.
