Hockey|Sweden’s streak without a medal at the World Cup was broken.
Prague
Swedish returned to hockey World Cup medals after a six-year hiatus. Tre Kronor ended its rare long dry season on Sunday in Prague by beating Canada 4-2 in the bronze medal match.
Still at the end of the final round Pierre-Luc Dubois gave Canada a 2–1 lead, but in the middle of the set, the match swung to Sweden.
Erik Karlsson shot first to equalize 2–2 and in 53.42 Carl Grundstrom with this wonderful shot of yours, the 3-2 hit that was the winning goal.
Swedish in the camp, the bronzes were received with joy, but no greater joy was seen.
“Especially after the stinging semifinal loss, it’s nice to leave here with something. Although of course we wanted something more. Is this still better than nothing”, the NHL star who received the first World Cup medal for adults in his career Rasmus Dahlin you said moderately.
After the match, there was an amusing moment on the ice – and one that reflected Sweden’s “joy” – when the president of the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation, who was part of the World Cup leadership ladder Heikki Hietanen came to hand the bronze trophy to the Swedish captain To Erik Karlsson.
After handing out the award, Hietanen urged Karlsson to raise his fist in the air, but he was not enthusiastic about it.
After taking a serious picture, Karlsson quickly left Hietanen’s pack and took the trophy directly to the bench.
Tre Kronor’s captain Erik Karlsson did not establish Heikki Hietanen’s celebration proposal.
In Sweden’s team photo, the trophy handed out by Hietanen was not visible, because Karlsson took it away to the changing room.
The bronze medal match the winning goal was a tough call for the Canadian goalkeeper To Jordan Binningtonas he practically passed the hit.
The ruck puck sent by Sweden from its defense zone came straight to Binnington and he shot it straight back towards the wing.
Unfortunately for the NHL keeper, Grundström was on the sideline, and he shook the puck directly from Binnington’s pass behind his back.
“Our friend wasn’t there. It was a spinning puck that I was just trying to clean out. Then it happened like this, which is unfortunate,” Binnington lamented after the match.
Canada, who played in the finals in the four previous World Cup tournaments, was now left out of the medals for the first time since 2018.
“Of course we would have liked to end the season with a win. It’s frustrating. We worked hard this month and welded together as a team,” said Binnington.
“It’s frustrating that we didn’t get a result out of it on the rink, but this also leaves a lot of friendships and experiences. This was an enjoyable trip”.
Carl Grundstöm scored the winning goal of the bronze medal match directly from a pass by Canadian goalkeeper Jordan Binnington.
Sunday’s bronze medal match was not very intense, and at times it seemed mostly like a game. The bronze medals didn’t seem to excite Canada in particular.
Canada has lost no fewer than five of its previous World Cup bronze medal matches.
“There are always different teams,” Binnington acknowledged.
of the World Cup the most anticipated player, Canada’s mega-promise Connor Bedard ended the tournament in the lands of shadows. Even in the bronze medal match, Canada’s 13th forward didn’t get more than a measly ten minutes of ice time.
The 18-year-old forward of the Chicago Blackhawks started the tournament with a bang, hitting 5+1 against assists in the first three games
After that, the taps were closed. The prodigy, known for his exceptional shooting, played the last seven matches of the tournament without goals. In three playoff games, Bedard collected two assists.
According to Bedard, the bronze match ignited, and there were no motivational problems.
“Every time there is a game, it excites. We wanted to win a medal, but now it happened like this. It doesn’t feel good. It’s frustrating,” Bedard commented, but didn’t want to analyze his own tournament in more detail.
“The loss still stings. The time to evaluate the tournament is then later”.
Although the tournament fell short of expectations, Bedard said he enjoyed the first adult World Championships in his career.
– This was a good experience. Great city and great fans. It was fun to participate in this tournament. I’m trying to take the positive things into this, announced Bedard.
The tournament towards the end, Bedard’s playing time dropped to the bottom, and the coaching clearly no longer trusted the teenage star. Canada’s head coach Andre Tourigny however, delivered glowing statements about Bedard after the bronze medal match.
“I think he’s great with the puck and he scored important goals for us early in the tournament. He is also a very good boy who is easy to train. He developed well,” concluded Tourigny.
Heiveröinen Bedard was badly rattled by the physical demands of the World Cup matches.
