The United Nations satellite agency in charge of nuclear energy presented its analyzes indicating that the dangers are deepening due to the evolution of Tehran and Pyongyang. They explained that the Islamic republic has greatly increased the amount of uranium enriched to 60% needed for the formation of atomic bombs. Meanwhile, the North Koreans would be in the process of reopening and expanding the testing facilities that had been partially closed in the past decade.
The International Atomic Energy Agency published a report this Wednesday, September 7, where it set off the alarms regarding the progress that Iran and North Korea are making.
The entity explained that Tehran is advancing steadily with its nuclear program in the framework where the negotiations to reinstate the 2015 agreement -called JCPOA for its acronym in English- are at an impasse when it approached a resolution.
The IAEA explained that Iran increased its 60% enriched uranium reserves by a third in three monthsa useful level of quality for the manufacture of atomic bombs, reaching 55.6 kilos.
The amount of uranium in total increased between May and August to 3,940.9 kilos, well above the 131.6 previously recorded and excessively higher than the limits agreed upon in the 2015 agreement.
Iran, which would have hindered the agency’s ability to monitor by disconnecting dozens of surveillance cameras, maintains that its intentions are peaceful and the development of uranium is for medical purposes.
However, from the IAEA they do not rule out that the fissile material could be developed with dual-use possibilities and the Middle Eastern country remains rigid in the inspection restrictions of the international organization.
In addition, in a second report, they insisted that Iran has not provided credible explanations for the reasons why there are uranium particles in three undeclared facilities, giving rise to “growing concern”.
Since the United States, under the command of Donald Trump, unilaterally broke the JCPOA and re-enacted the sanctions, Tehran began its atomic race, which is very close to ending and each advance represents a greater obstacle for the negotiations to reactivate nuclear weapons to prosper. limitations.
It forced Iran to have an enriched uranium reserve of up to 300 kilos in gas form, the equivalent of 200 in solid matter, a number far below the proportions it has now.
North Korea expands, rearms test sites
Within the report published this Wednesday, the IAEA realizes that Pyongyang is expanding its base in Punggye-ri, a space where six atomic bombs have been tested since 2006.
There, the government is erecting new buildings and has begun work to reopen a testing tunnel, raising concerns about the national atomic program. Six tests were carried out in that center between 2006 and 2017.
“There are indications that the Adit 3 tunnel has been reopened at the nuclear test base near Punggye-ri”states the document published by the UN entity in charge of atomic energy.
In 2018, North Korea had announced the dismantling of the base and the partial collapse of the tunnel as a sign of wanting to denuclearize the peninsula. However, there are estimates that excavation work is being carried out to reassemble it.
According to the IAEA, since May the tunnel is likely to be ready and now the complex is being expanded by adding buildings and repaving the road to the base, something they described as “very worrying.”
In addition, they also underlined their concern about the expansion of the uranium enrichment program.
“The continuation of the North Korean program is a clear violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions and is deeply regrettable,” the IAEA said.
