São Paulo samba school parade paid homage to hip hop culture and featured police costumes with allusions to demons
The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), said this Thursday (15.Feb.2024) that he would give a zero rating to the São Paulo samba school Vai-Vai, which paraded last Saturday (10.Feb), in São Paulo. In the presentation, there were members dressed as police officers who made allusions to demons.
“If I were a judge, I would give a zero score on the fantasy aspect”, said the governor. The statement was given to journalists after event delivery of the reconstruction of the Plínio Gonçalves de Oliveira Santos state school, in the city of São Sebastião.
He also said that he found the samba school costumes “in poor taste”. According to Tarcísio, the police are an institution that deserves “respect”.
“When we are in need, who do we turn to? The police. And it's not just public safety. It's in civil defense actions, it's when a person chokes, it's in traffic incidents, it's in drownings. How many lives do these guys save?”he questioned.
Tarcísio also praised the members of the institution, whom he called “excellent professionals who owe nothing to anyone”. “These guys are brave, they are heroes. So, this type of debauchery is not cool, it's bad, it's aggressive, it's in bad taste and it's a 0 for them [Vai-Vai]”he stated.

The Vai-Vai samba school paraded at the São Paulo Carnival on Saturday (Feb 10), with a plot paying homage to the history of hip hop in Brazil. One of the topics explored was the marginalization of artists during the construction of the musical genre in Brazil.
The demonstrations by Rota police officers with allusions to demons aroused criticism from police representatives and criticism from congressmen.
O Sindpesp (Union of Police Officers of the State of São Paulo) released a note rejecting the Vai-Vai allegory. According to the president of the Union, Jacqueline Valadares, the samba school treated law enforcement agents with derision.
In a statement, Vai-Vai said, on Tuesday (13.Feb) that it did not intend to promote any type of individualized attack or provocation against police officers and public security agents.
According to the samba school, the parade was a critical manifesto in the city of São Paulo, focusing on exclusions such as hip hop culture and its 4 elements – breaking, graffiti, MCs and DJs.
“It is public knowledge that the precursors of the hip hop movement in Brazil were marginalized and treated like vagabonds, suffering repression and often being arrested just for dancing and adopting a style of dress considered inappropriate for the time. What the school did, on the avenue, was to insert the album and the historical events in the context in which they occurred, in the plot of the parade”wrote the association.
