President of the Chamber states that, even though he shows himself to be a partner of the government, he gives the “face to be beaten” by the other 512 deputies
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said this Wednesday (April 24, 2024) that, despite not having voted for the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the 2022 elections, he never failed in his obligations as president of Casa Baixa to offer “all the conditions for him to do well” 1st year of term.
Lira stated that the Chamber is considered the “Congress’s ugly duckling” and that, therefore, negotiations are treated with less ceremony by the government. Even so, he said that Planalto deals with “a president [da Casa Baixa] who has the courage to show his face to be beaten by others 512 [deputados]“. The statement was made during the 4th Cycle of Debates event CACB (Confederation of Commercial and Business Associations of Brazil), in Brasília.
After the tension in the relationship between Lira and minister Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations), Planalto is now trying to recreate a strategy to articulate agendas of interest to the government. The most pressing is the agreement to maintain Lula's vetoes on issues dear to the government, such as the temporary release of prisoners and the cut of R$5.6 billion in commission amendments foreseen in the Budget.
The analysis session of these vetoes –32 in total, with 28 closing the agenda– is scheduled for 7pm this Wednesday (24th April), but a meeting of leaders at 3pm is the government's hope to try to postpone the vote and not suffer a series of defeats.
In her speech, Lira highlighted that there are issues that Congress “cannot support modification, will not modify and will not accept attempts to modify by decrees or ordinances”.
“Without generating a crisis, without generating discomfort, there are checks and balances that have the obligation to balance themselves”declared the president of Casa Baixa.
