Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes, who tried to take out a bank loan of R$ 17 thousand reais in her uncle’s name, spoke to the program Fantastic, from TV Globo, who didn’t realize that the elderly man was dead in the Bangu bank branch, in the west of Rio. “I lived moments in my life that I couldn’t stand anymore. Very difficult. It was horrible, I didn’t realize my uncle was dead,” he said. “I’m not that person they’re talking about, I’m not that monster,” he added.
According to Érika, neither she nor her family needed the money, and the person who wanted the loan was her uncle himself for work in the backyard of the house where they lived.
She also said that Paulo was a quiet person, but that they had a good relationship. “(We had a) great relationship, he was independent, I wasn’t his caretaker,” said the niece.
A week before the episode, Paulo had been hospitalized due to pneumonia. On the day he was discharged, Érika went with him to a bank branch, where they had a loan approved.
The looting would take place the next day, when the woman entered the place with the already dead man.
Érika was denounced by the 2nd Public Prosecutor’s Office for the crimes of attempted embezzlement and vilification of a corpse.
The prosecution claims that, although the loan was taken out by Braga when he was still alive, the withdrawal could no longer be carried out, since, at the time of the accused’s arrest in the act, the victim had already died.
She was arrested, but was released to be released due to her poor mental health and to take care of her daughter with special needs, according to the judge’s decision.
Remember the case
Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes took a 68-year-old man who was dead, in a wheelchair, to a bank branch to try to get a loan in his name. “Sign so you don’t give me any more headaches,” the woman asked the corpse, acting as if the person were alive. The scene took place on Tuesday, 16th, at an agency in Bangu, in the west zone of Rio.
Bank employees called the police and the woman, who says she is the dead man’s niece, is being investigated. The police say that she may have committed theft through fraud or embezzlement, according to circumstances that are yet to be investigated.
According to the police, Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes arrived at the bank taking Paulo Roberto Braga, 68, in a wheelchair. He would be a client of the agency and there was a pre-approved loan in his name. The guards allowed him to enter in the wheelchair.
The woman then took the man to an employee and explained that there was a pre-approved loan worth R$17,000 in the name of the man – her supposed uncle.
The employees called the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu), which found that the man had been dead for at least a few hours, and the Civil Police, who took the woman to give a statement at the 34th DP (Bangu). Erika was arrested red-handed.
The prosecution also highlights that the elderly man would have been discharged the day before the events, after hospitalization caused by pneumonia, “it is certain that he was quite weak, which is easily verified, notably, given the testimony given by the doctor from the Emergency Care Unit”.
It also points out that the autopsy report itself attests that the victim presented a “cachectic state” during the examination.
“Thus, one cannot forget the possibility that the accused’s conduct may have contributed to or accelerated the event of death, by subjecting him to such physical effort, at a time when he needed care,” says another excerpt from the complaint.
