Bolivia.- A minor of only 12 years of age who was sexually abused and pregnant by her grandfather in Bolivia, between tears and pleas, she asked for her pregnancy to be interrupted.
According to the Ombudsman, Nadia Cruz, the infant reported no longer having the strength to continue carrying the pregnancywhile expressing his desire to return home with his brothers.
“I can’t take it anymore, I want them to take him out. I no longer have the strength, I want to go back to my house with my little brothers. I don’t want this for myself anymore,” he said.
In this sense, Cruz announced that the hospital indicated that she must still wait 5 weeks for the pregnancy to be operated on, despite the fact that a comprehensive assessment has not been carried out that accounts for her state of health and if her life is in danger.
Meanwhile, staff from the Germán Urquidi Maternal Hospital in Cochachamba indicated, after carrying out medical evaluations on the 12-year-old girl, that at this point it is no longer possible to terminate the pregnancy legallythis because this is in the sixth month
of gestation.
“The Ombudsman comes to pressure so that it has to be interrupted regardless of gestational age, they are not seeing the technical part and the opinion of the doctors practically does not count,” said José Pardo, director of the hospital.
He explained that the product is no longer a fetus, but rather a child formed in the womb of the infant, so an intervention to remove it, such as a Caesarean sectioncould endanger both the girl and the baby.
“From the medical point of view and from the obstetrics norm, abortion refers to a maximum of 20 weeks of pregnancy and, in Bolivia, up to 22 weeks, it exceeds that limit, it already becomes a premature birth. You can do a cesarean section , but that child already has survival conditions. In addition, as it is not usual, it is a hysterectomy, the hemorrhage is greater, the degree of infections is greater, than if the pregnancy were 8 or 9 months old. So, performing a cesarean section at a uterus, a girl’s womb is practically splitting the uterus in two for the baby to come out,” he explained.
In this context, the doctors of the Maternal Hospital could carry out a caesarean section, but when the fetus is fully formedsince the members of the medical board warned that, if he was removed at this time, the baby would be born with cerebral palsy, heart, respiratory and kidney problems, as well as blindness.
For her part, the head of the Ombudsman for Children, Cinthia Prado, has emphasized the psychological and emotional consequences that the 12-year-old girl will have if she brings the baby as a result of the sexual abuse she suffered from her grandfather.
“She is not biologically, affectively, or psychologically qualified to assume this great responsibility. The affectation is quite great. The girl is at an age of development, therefore it is a very difficult situation to cope with,” he said.
