Remarking that Russia has already “failed in its main objectives” almost two weeks after the invasion, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
“In the end, I am absolutely convinced that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin will fail, and that Russia will suffer a strategic defeat in Ukraine.”at a joint press conference with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in Washington.
Blinken, who just returned from a tour where he visited several European countries bordering Ukraine where refugees are concentrated, stressed that Russia “has already failed in its main objectives.”
“The question now – he pointed out – is whether or not President Putin decides to try to reduce the losses he has caused himself and the Russian people.”
Regarding the possibility of reinforcing a no-fly zone in Ukraine, as requested by the Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelenski, Blinken and Truss agreed in their rejection. The British diplomat said that “the reality is that establishing this measure would lead to a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia”, something that the Alliance does not want.
Blinken expressed himself along the same lines, indicating that “the objective is to end the war, not to expand it.”
Both diplomats defended the harshness and effectiveness of the economic sanctions adopted by the West, to which London and Washington added on Tuesday the veto on oil imports from Russia.

While the bombing continues in Ukraine, and almost two weeks after the Russian invasion, more than 2.15 million Ukrainians have already fled their country, mainly to Poland and Hungary.
According to the most recent count of the United Nations Office for Human Rights, up to March 7, it was possible to verify and document that 474 people were killed in the attacks, including 29 children; and a total of 861 were injured, including 44 minors.
However, he pointed out that the real numbers of wounded and dead are surely higher, given that the information arrives with difficulties, especially from cities such as Mariúpol, Volnovaja and Izium, where the fighting is intensifying and there is talk of hundreds more victims.
