Reparation after decades of impunity
Despite the repeated complaint by the Guatemalan Association of Detained and Disappeared Relatives (Famdegua), criminal investigations began almost 14 years after the massacre and so far no individuals have been charged.
After the decision of the Inter-American Court, Famdegua demanded that Guatemala comply with the sentence and recognized the “tireless work that the survivors of the Los Josefinos massacre have done on the path to justice and reparation for the acts of which it is carried out. responsible to the State of Guatemala ”.
To repair, the Guatemalan State must remove all obstacles that maintain the impunity of the case and initiate investigations to try and punish those responsible. In addition to reactivating these judicial processes, the State will have to pay compensation and the costs of the trial and build a monument in the area where a mass grave was found where members of the Army buried some of those killed.
On Tuesday, December 21, along with this conviction, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights also notified judgments against the states of Argentina and Ecuador for different cases of human rights violations.
