Hyundai will also participate in the 102nd edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. And it will do so with the first and latest addition to its high-performance electric range: we are obviously talking about Ioniq 5 N, present in two examples at the starting line of the race scheduled for June 23rd. The 650 HP electric SUV developed by the Korean brand will be there with a very specific objective: to set the record as “Electric Production SUV/Crossover“.
Electric return to Pikes Peak
“Let's go back to the mountain stronger than beforewith a unique electric crossover in its category – commented Till Wartenberg, Head of N Brand and Motorsport – Hyundai has historically always brought new technologies and new products to Pikes Peak and Ioniq 5 N is faithful to this tradition, because it represents a new idea of high-performance EV. The Ioniq 5 N will demonstrate what customers can expect from their vehicles.”
Two Ioniq 5 N at the starting line
They will be behind the wheel of the two Ioniq 5 N models present at the start of the race Paul Dallenbach and Ron Zaras: the former has won the PPIHC eleven times and set an all-time record in 1993, while the latter is a rookie in the competition and is the newest member of the team. “For a rally enthusiast, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a bucket list event, for me it has been that way since the first time I saw the film 'Climb Dance' with a 56k internet connection – the latter himself made known – So It's an incredible honor racing here for the first time ever, with an Ioniq 5 N and the support of the amazing team at Hyundai. I'm excited to share my journey from a young viewer making my debut as a competitor, as challenging as that journey may be.”
Hyundai modifications
The two examples of Ioniq 5 N that will take part in the race are in fact in the standard version that we also find on the road but with some small precautions, necessary to comply with the competition rules from a safety point of view: the driver's seat, for example, has been replaced with a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, the seat belts are HANS compatible six-point Sabelts, the rear seats were removed, and a roll cage and fire suppression system were eventually installed. The performance specifications, as mentioned, they do not change: peak power of 650 HP, 84 kWh battery, sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and maximum speed of 260 km/h.
