Mexico City.- The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that “John” made landfall along the southern coast of Mexico, just south-southwest of Marquelia, Guerrero, with maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h.
The phenomenon made landfall around 9:15 p.m., however, its effects began to be felt on Monday afternoon, both on the Costa Chica of Guerrero and in municipalities on the coast of Oaxaca.
On Monday afternoon, authorities in Oaxaca and Guerrero ordered the suspension of classes in anticipation of the imminent impact of this meteorological phenomenon. In Oaxaca, in addition to this measure, Governor Salomón Jara reported that he would travel to the Costa region to coordinate emergency actions.
“Generate the institutional deployment of all state agencies; mobilize machinery to handle any contingency on roads and highways; enable temporary shelters to care for families; evacuate tourist areas, suspend classes in all educational institutions in the area; keep the population informed,” he said in a video.
In Guerrero, the national coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velázquez, and Governor Evelyn Salgado reported that the DN-III plan, the Navy plan, and the National Guard plan were launched in the municipalities of Cuajinicuilapa, Copala, Florencio Villarreal and Marquelia, in the Costa Chica region. While 299 shelters were set up in Guerrero, in Oaxaca the total number of temporary shelters is 30.
