In the early hours of today, the Tropical Cyclone John has been downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scaleHowever, despite the decrease in its intensity, its influence remains significant for the state of Guerrero, where it is located on land, moving north-northwest at a speed of 13 km/h, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua).
The center of the cyclone is located 75 kilometers east of Acapulco and 90 kilometers northwest of Punta Maldonado, with sustained winds of 160 km/h and gusts reaching 200 km/h. These conditions generate significant waves, with heights ranging between 5 and 7 meters on the coasts of eastern Guerrero and western Oaxaca, which keeps the hurricane prevention zone active from eastern Acapulco to Lagunas de Chacahua, in Oaxaca.
In addition to the winds and strong waves, Hurricane John is causing extraordinary rainfall in Oaxaca and Guerrero, exceeding 250 mm, and intense rain in Veracruz and Puebla. The cloud bands accompanying the cyclone increase the probability of significant rainfall in the center of the country, including the Valley of Mexico.
