HS Vantaa Commuters have to “fumble” in Vantaa because the parking machines do not work at all – “The weather conditions in Finland are like that”

There are major technical problems with access parking in Vantaa. Problems are caused by, for example, a malfunctioning card reader or the fact that the machine does not accept a payment card.

Flow your trip with access parking! With access parking, you can go on a trip with your own car and without the hassle of driving or parking in a foreign city.

This is how VR advertises access parking on its website. At least at Vantaa train stations, parking is not so smooth.

According to tips from Helsingin Sanomat, there are several technical problems with access parking in Vantaa. QR code readers in access parking lots are often out of order and unable to read mobile tickets from people’s phones. Sometimes the trip cannot be paid for because the machine does not accept the payment card.

In addition, passengers have had problems with the keyboard.

“The monitor is not working properly. When you enter the registration number, the next letter will be forced, no matter how you try to hit the right one. ”

According to the reader, people spend more time with screens than before because time goes into fixing errors.

“Fortunately, there are fewer passengers these days, so there’s more time to fumble.”

Parking facilities corresponds to two different parties. QR code readers are installed and serviced by Helsinki Region Transport (HSL). The parking machines in the access parking areas are the responsibility of the City of Vantaa.

Vantaa replaced the parking meters at the beginning of January. The equipment has been supplied by Kaskea. Previous equipment was supplied by Finnpark.

Supervisor of the City of Vantaa Ari Piipponen says both new and old devices have received a lot of feedback.

“The weather conditions in Finland are such that no one was a supplier, so problems can arise.”

According to Piipponen, there have been problems with the devices just described by the reader: the code reader does not work or the card cannot be paid for. In addition, user errors are reported.

User errors include errors caused by the user’s own actions, such as accidentally entering an incorrect registry key. According to Piipponen, it is possible that user errors have occurred due to inoperable displays.

“The screens may be incorrectly adjusted, making typing errors easier. They may have the wrong touch sensitivity. ”

The parking machine on the left is installed by the city of Vantaa. The bastard on the right with the code reader is the responsibility of HSL. Sometimes the fault is in the code reader, sometimes in the automaton. Sometimes there is something wrong with both.

Piipponen says that touch sensitivity can be adjusted if the problem is known.

“The instructions on the vending machine have a phone number that you can call if you have a problem with the vending machine. You can also send us a message for parking control. ”

QR code attempts have already been made to solve reading problems several years I drive. Piipponen says that there are problems with the equipment, especially during the winter. Optical devices are affected by weather conditions and are prone to failure.

“They condense moisture, for example, and then they don’t always work.”

HSL’s project manager Petteri Huppunen says that there are several problems with using a code reader, some of which can be affected by the user.

“One problem is that the brightness of the phone’s screen is too dim, making it difficult for the machine to read the code. The other is that the cell phone is in the wrong position. ”

The third problem, according to Huppunen, is the slowness of the device. If the device reads the QR code too slowly, the user may think it is not working and take the mobile phone out of the reader too soon.

Sometimes the problem is that the information about the code reader does not go to the machine.

“The devices should work together, but sometimes there have been connection problems between them,” says Huppunen.

Problems there is no quick fix, but both Piipponen and Huppunen encourage feedback on malfunctioning devices so that problems can be addressed.

“And if a device receives a message that it is not working, we will leave it unattended until the fault has been rectified,” says Piipponen.

Access parking must be paid for at all Vantaa stations in the future. Parking for another week is free at Korso, Hiekkaharju, Koivukylä and Vehkala stations. Parking at Korso, Hiekkaharju and Koivukylä stations must be paid for on 13 June. from. The Vehkala car park will become chargeable during the summer.
