Schoolwork interrupted at Haarla school in Turku on Monday due to a drop in indoor temperature. Luostarivuori Lyseo high school, on the other hand, switched to distance learning due to frozen pipes. Bugs are currently being fixed.
The indoor temperature of the Haarla school in Hirvensalo has dropped to six degrees during the Christmas holidays. Normally, the internal temperature of the school building is around 21 degrees Celsius.
Principal of Haarla school Minna Kirkkola says that the drop in temperature was caused by a problem with the internal heat distribution of the building.
“Right away in the morning, we noticed that the school is noticeably cold. I was immediately in touch with property management and the service area manager. In addition, I talked with the director of education and training and the occupational health and safety commissioner. Our common policy was that school work at school would end after eating,” says Kirkkola.
Students there was no need to go outside during recess, and they were allowed to attend lessons in outdoor clothes.
“And it was still cold,” says Kirkkola.
About that guardians and staff were informed via Wilma. In addition, the students could call the guardians about it. The temperature of the daycare center operating in the same building has been the same as before, and the daycare center's operations have continued as normal.
Kirkkola says that there is still no information on when the heat distribution problem will be solved. Guardians and staff will be informed about this during Monday afternoon and evening.
Also Luostarivuori Lyseo high school had challenges after the holidays: the school switched to distance learning for Monday and Tuesday, because the building's pipes had frozen over the weekend and all the toilets are not in use.
“In a school with nearly 800 students, four functioning toilets are not enough, we had to switch to distance learning”, the principal Johanna Levola-Lyytinen states.
He received information about the frozen pipes on Sunday evening and immediately informed the school staff, students and guardians about the transition to distance education.
“There was no one here today. The information went well obviously through Wilma and Instagram. One student did come because he wanted to study in the school's working space,” says Levola-Lyytinen.
Although the school is otherwise in distance learning on Tuesday, the retest will be held in face-to-face learning.
“For newcomers, the school's working toilets are sufficient.”
