John Boyne’s successful novel is lived in Germany during World War II.
Irishman John Boynen international sales success Boy in striped pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pajamassuom. Laura BeckBazar) tells of the friendship between the son of a Nazi officer and a Jewish son in a concentration camp. Mark Hermanin directed by the film version of the novel was completed in 2008, and was a success too.
Eight-year-old Bruno has to leave his friend when his father gets promoted and the family moves from Berlin – to Auschwitz.
In his new residence, Bruno eventually finds one of his peers, Shmuel, who lives behind a barbed wire and always wears a nightgown. Dad has been promoted to concentration camp commander, but little Bruno isn’t told.
The book readers considered for a long time uncertain about where we are and what is happening.
The child’s perspective also provides another universally valid message that I guess applies to all families at all times.
The parents are trying to hide from Bruno the nature of a nearby camp. However, children always see and hear more than adults think. If they are not provided with the right information, they will draw their own conclusion that may be more destructive to the truth.
Shmuel’s father is lost, and the boys decide together to look for him. Shmuel lends Bruno a striped pajama so he doesn’t get attention on the other side of the fence.
Bruno wears borrowed clothes and slips under the fence.
