Northern lights are rare in Helsinki. On the night before Monday, however, they were visible despite the city lights.
Northern lights rarely seen in Helsinki. The news about their possibility does make people take to the streets to stare, but because of the city lights, the end result is often only a short night’s sleep and disappointment.
Sunday evening from Roihuvoori Konsta Ojamaata however postponed. He was on the rooftop ventilation balcony late at night when he noticed colors in the night sky.
“What the hell, the sky is on fire”, he says he was surprised and took a picture with his mobile phone.
With a down jacket in the photo taken from the roof of an eight-story building, the green aurora borealis are clearly visible. The picture could even be called rare.
According to the statistics of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the northern lights can be seen in the Helsinki region only one night a month. Even then, their glow is usually only visible further away from the settlement.
The last visible northern lights lit up the sky of the capital region in August.
