HS Helsinki | Helsinki’s oldest movie theater is closing down

Erik Bergenstad had time to run the Compact Video movie theater from 1978. Now the legend ends.

Helsinki Compact Video, a traditional video store on Fredrikinkatu, will stop its operations at the end of April, a week before May Day.

Business owner Erik Bergenstad tells HS that he is closing his shop partly because he plans to retire.

“There are other reasons besides retirement. The last three years have been miserable in terms of sales. Due to the corona pandemic, people stayed at home and did not do business in my store,” says Bergenstad.

Bergenstad’s wife falling ill with cancer also contributed to Bergenstad deciding to close his shop, he says.

Erik Bergenstad had time to run the Compact Video movie theater since 1978.

“The activity started on Lönnrotinkatu. On Fredrikinkatu, the business has operated at two different addresses. The business has been in the current location for 17 years,” says Bergenstad.

Compact Video says on its website that it is “Helsinki’s oldest movie theater”.
