HS Espoo | Espoo will soon be crossed by an ambitious road, the route of which is a dismay to many – Now the mother justifies why criticizing this particular route is more than a nimby phenomenon

The city of Espoo is planning a wider, four-lane fairway alongside the narrow and winding Finnoonti, which would connect Finno and the center of Espoo.

Motorists circling Finnoontie in a snowflake that meanders from the center of Espoo to Finnoos, the former Suomenoja. Between the two centers, the field, the detached houses and the forest are curved with low speed restrictions.

In the woods on both sides of Finnoontie, dog walkers, Nordic walkers, strollers push and later winter skiers.

In Espoo’s visions, the narrow and winding Finnoontie will no longer be the main road connecting the centers in the future, but the city wants to streamline motoring and build a wider main road, Espoonväylä.

At the same time, the city plans to increase the number of apartments near the new route. In the preparation of the plan, it has drawn more residential houses, especially around the present Malminmäki and further north to the City Rock.

Especially Residential and local service plans adjacent to the northern part of the waterway should be treated with caution – the areas are privately owned and, at least for the time being, there has been no interest from landowners in building the areas.

The new residential area with less than 1,400 inhabitants planned for Bosmalm has been criticized by the Helsinki Region Transport HSL in addition to many who opposed the construction.

Drawing the fairway over the popular outdoor, recreational and nature area of Söderskog’s fields and central park will shock many Espoo residents.

Latokaskessa resident Tanja Itkonen is one of them, and he does not speak only for himself. The project has received criticism as well from a local nature conservation association. In addition to landscape and recreational values, it has emphasized that a four-lane road would significantly impair animal mobility.

In Itkonen’s opinion, this is more than a traditional nimby phenomenon, where you don’t want something uncomfortable in your own backyard. The central park, as the name implies, is in the middle of Espoo, and there will be outdoor activities in many residential areas.

Itkonen moved from Helsinki three years ago to Espoo. Since then, the sandy paths of the central park with their forest and field landscapes have become familiar to the car-free, outdoor-loving family.

On weekends, when there is more time, the family rides the bus to Nuuksio, but the scenery of the central park goes to refresh everyday life.

“We often visit nearby ponds with Trangia cocoa.”

There are a few small houses at the end of Malminmäentie. This outdoor route now runs next to them. Many new residential buildings have been planned for the sparsely built-up area.

Now routes that have become important are ending up in turmoil due to Espoonväylä plans. Together with Itkonen, we walk along the Finnoontie from the shops of Malminmäki in a flash to the silence and the river over which the bridge leads.

Nöykkiönkatu and the four-lane Espoonväylä, which have not yet been built and are drawn on broken lines on the design maps, would meet. Itkonen points out that traffic noise would be farther from the road alignment and noise would reduce the refreshing effect of the recreation area.

“Where nature restores and lowers stress hormone levels and blood pressure, traffic noise has the opposite effect.”

Due to the corona pandemic, the area has become an increasingly important lifeline for many teleworkers, cutting off thought and sedentary work and increasing well-being.

In addition to changing the landscape, Tanja Itkonen is concerned about the noise brought by the wider road.

Nearly For Itkosen, who has moved completely away from work, the working time slots allow him to have a five-minute walk to the shops during the lunch break and grab a refill if necessary, and then take a good quarter-foot walk through the trees or the open field.

“Espoo is home to a relatively large number of people working in expert and managerial work, and the number of teleworkers in these groups will continue to increase. From this point of view, traffic planning investing in private cars is obsolete at the planning stage. ”

In addition, Itkonen believes that the road alignment seen in the town plan proposals in 2019 with the residential areas planned for it is in conflict with the way the City of Espoo markets itself.

He quotes first city websites:

“We are gaining a better understanding of the value of the surrounding nature and urban green for the well-being of residents, biodiversity and adaptation to climate change. Perspectives on nature and recreation are included in all zoning.”

He then continues himself:

“Espoonväylä in the middle of the central park does not do this in any way.”

In the design papers, the four-lane Espoonväylä has been arranged behind the shops in Malminmäki in the foreground in the forest and field landscape of the Central Park.

For road alignment can get acquainted In the map service of Espoo and select the town plans pending in the Zoning section as the information displayed on the map. The formulas Bosmalm and Söderskoginaukea are due to be submitted to the Town Planning Board next spring 2022.

The first part of the Espoonväylä between Finnoonlaaksontie and Puolarmetsänkatu has already been built.

At the moment, there are traffic lights at the Espoonväylä, Puolarmetsänkatu T-junction, but it is planned to make a roundabout later when the Espoonväylä alignment points directly north.

“The soil conditions in the area, ie the behavior of clay soil and groundwater, proved to be more difficult than expected, which is why the construction time was slightly longer than expected towards the end of the year,” says the construction manager. Hannu Lehtikankare From the city of Espoo.

In connection with the construction work of the first phase, the pipeline bridge below Puolarintie was renewed and the alignment of the Finnoobäcken stream was changed. The transferred channel now runs 10 to 20 meters further east in a new drum pipe below the street.

A sign telling about the work of the first part of the Espoonväylä near the Puolarmaari intersection. The work will be completed in December.

Traffic Planning Engineer Kaisa Lahti The need for a new road from the City of Espoo justifies the fact that Finnoontie has a lot of traffic in relation to its size, 17,500 vehicles per day.

“According to calculations, there are 14,600 cars a day south of Nöykkiönkatu, which is a lot of traffic on the plot street. According to a traffic survey conducted in 2018, the number will be halved with the construction of the Espoonväylä. ”
