Emission reduction targets will be tightened and more milestones will be added.
Government has completed its proposal for a new climate law. Minister for the Environment and Climate Emma Kari (error) presents the new climate law at 1.30 pm. HS shows the press conference live.
The government proposes that the carbon neutrality target written in the government program be enshrined in law. The law also sets percentage reduction targets for the coming decades.
At issue is already Finland’s second climate law. Finland’s first climate law came into force in 2015.
However, both climate change and the strengthening of climate policy progressed so rapidly that the law must already be put in place.
A new climate law was needed to ensure that Finland became a carbon-neutral state in 2035. The carbon neutrality target was set Antti Rinteen (sd) in government negotiations in the spring of 2019 and since then has also become prime minister Sanna Marinin (sd) the objective of the government.
Compared to the previous climate law, what is new, for example, is that land use has now also been included. Land use plays a major role both in causing and controlling emissions. Forests absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, while fields and peat production areas cause climate emissions.
It is also new to record the rights of the Sámi.
The news will be updated after the press conference.
