Just a few hours ago, UEFA has announced a change of format in the dispute of the next Champions Leaguewhich will be the 2024/25 edition of the exciting contest, with the aim of “keep pace with broader changes to the game“, based on “extensive consultations with the main stakeholders of the European football community”, as reported by the highest body of European football. Below, what you need to know.
What is the main change in the 2024/25 Champions League?
The fundamental change of the reforms announced by the UEFA Executive Committee is the abandonment of the group stage of the current format.
The current Champions League season includes 32 participants divided into eight groups of four. Starting with the 2024/25 season, The 36 participating clubs will compete in a league phase of the Champions League (the old group phase) to give four more teams the opportunity to compete against the best clubs in Europe. These 36 teams will participate in a single league competition in which they will all compete in a common classification.
With the new format, teams will play eight games in the new league phase (old group phase). They will no longer play three rivals twice (home and away), but instead will face eight different teams, playing half of them at home and the other half away. To determine the eight rivals, the teams will initially be divided into four pots. Each team will then face two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against one team from each pot at home and one away.
This will give clubs the opportunity to face a greater number of rivals and increases fans' chances of seeing the best teams face each other more often in the early stages of the competition. It will also lead to more competitive matches for all clubs.
