Real Madrid visit the Olympic stadium in Kiev to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the third day of the group stage of the Champions League 2021/2022 and both have very recently their last meeting.
Spaniards and Ukrainians also shared a group last season. Until then they had met twice and both ended with a Madrid victory, but last season Shakhtar tied the record. Yes, the Ukrainians won both games in the group stage against Real Madrid.
The first match, which was on the first day, was played on October 21 at the Alfredo di Stéfano stadium in Valdebebas and Madrid arrived as favorites but that poster was not enough to defeat Luis Castro’s men who were winning at halftime 0-3.
Teté opened the scoring after half an hour of play. In the 33rd minute, Raphael Varane made it 0-2 after scoring on his own goal and Solomon scored the third in the 42nd minute. In the second half, Zidane’s men went for the comeback. In just 5 minutes Luka Modric and Vinicius put the 2-3 but the scoreboard no longer moved.
Shakhtar Donetsk took all three points and, after the draw in the other match between Inter and Borussia Mönchengladbach, they were the leader of the group while Madrid was bottom.
The second confrontation between the Ukrainians and the Spaniards would come on the fifth day of the group stage and the script was the same. The whites arrived in Kiev second in the group with 7 points to the 4 of the Donetsk team that was third, both with the classification to eighth at stake and the group could not be tighter.
The Ukrainian team surprised Madrid again and won, this time 2-0, with goals from Dentinho and Solomon. In this way, both teams reached the last day with options to go to the next round. Finally Madrid was first in the group while Shakhtar had to settle for being third and playing the Europa League.
The Ukrainian team has already made it difficult for Madrid to qualify once, and if Ancelotti’s team is not able to get the three points they can get into a mess as the 2020/2021 season already happened. Losing to the Sheriff can cost you dearly.
