David Benajmin James (54 years old) was always a peculiar guy. During his professional career, especially in Liverpool and in the selection of Englandfulfilled that stereotype that marks goalkeepers as “special” people.
This Sunday, James returned to Anfield. And, like in his good times, he messed up again. During the break of the game Liverpool-Chelsea (2-1) of the premierthe former goalkeeper jumped onto the pitch to participate in an event in support of an NGO dedicated to helping young people without resources.
As is usual in this type of initiative, fans of different ages had the opportunity to take a penalty against the famous English goalkeeper. And that’s where he came scandal.
When it was his turn to shoot an 11-year-old boy, James stood with his back to the goal line. Seconds before the shot, he turned around, the kid kicked the ball with enough force and placement, and the goalkeeper flew to his left to stop it.
Seeing the young footballer’s disappointment, James invited him to take another penalty. This time the boy took a centered shot, the goalkeeper went to the right… but at the last moment he deflected the ball with his leg. The boy, disgusted, turned around and walked out of the area while several fans present in the stadium They booed James.
The matter sparked debate on social media, with people outraged by the James’ “little empathy” and some in favor of the former soccer player having “taught the child to try harder.”
What really upset those who were angry was the attitude of the same goalkeeper in another penalty taken by an adult of about 50 years old. In this case, unlike what happened with the boy, James boldly lets himself score a goal.
