The Bluesky social media app has just reached first place on the free download charts in the Apple App Store in the United States, making it, at least for now, more popular than Meta Threads and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The decentralized social media platform has seen a new influx of users in the last week, as more X users resent Elon Musk’s political ambitions and abandon X, their social media platform, for an alternative.
More than one million new users have joined Bluesky since the 2024 US presidential election on November 5, marked by Musk’s influence.
What is Bluesky and how to get started?
First launched in 2019 as a project within Twitter, Bluesky became independent from the company before Musk’s acquisition and subsequent name change. Bluesky also caught the attention of some former tweeters back in 2023, when new users could only register through an invitation system. Now You no longer need a code to join, and anyone can sign up. The social media platform is available in your browser at bsky.app or through a mobile application (Android, iOS). I’m still learning how to use it, but I know that Bluesky offers you an almost overwhelming amount of options when you sign upsuch as the option to host your own server. That is very good and maintains the platform decentralizedbut it’s probably more complicated than you’d like if all you’re looking for is sports results and shitposts.
When creating an account, you will probably want to leave Bluesky Social as a hosting provider, since that’s what most people use. Next, enter your email address, create a strong password and enter your date of birth to verify that you pass the minimum age of 13 years. Next, you’ll have to come up with a clever username. Please note that the full name will be expanded to @examplehandle.bsky.social. Continue setting up your profile by filling out your bio and uploading a photo or creating an avatar.
Before you start following anyone, open Configuration (Settings) to activate two-factor authentication, which will make your account more secure. Then click on the tab Moderation (Moderation) to add the words you want to mute, if any. Here you can also choose whether you want to view or block any adult content on your feed.
Find people to follow on Bluesky
One of the highlights of the platform is the freedom of choice when deciding what you want to see. First are the feeds Discover (Discover) and Continue (Follow), which should be familiar to X users, as should the interface. Each of them shows a feed algorithmically generated from popular posts and a feed Reverse chronological posts from people you follow. As a new user, you’ll see a list of popular accounts to follow.
You can also create your own shareable lists of users to follow or follow lists of feeds created by other Bluesky users. Follow one of these curated lists (called “starter packs”, or starter packs, is a great way to follow large groups of accounts at once based on a specific niche or interest.
