Mexico is an extremely important country for the Latin American region, this is something that multiple companies have made clear in the past. Thus, it should not be a big surprise that Nintendo pay more attention to our country again in recent years. This can not only be seen with the commercial created specifically for Mexico that we saw in 2023, but during the CCXP that took place last weekend, Nintendo was present with a space for fans, thus marking its return to national events after years of absence.
During our attendance at the first CCXP in Mexico, we had the opportunity to talk with Romina Whitlock, marketing director of Nintendo Latin America, about the position that our country has in Nintendo’s plans. This is what he told us:
“Mexico is the largest country we have in Latin America. We see it as extremely important, not only today, but for the future, and we continue to focus on its growth. In year seven of the console [Nintendo Switch] We had a record year in Mexico. “We always see Mexico as an opportunity.”
The CCXP represents Nintendo’s great return to entertainment and video game events in Mexico. In this way, Romina Whitlock spoke to us about what this celebration means to them, the reason why they chose the CCXP, and if they plan to make more appearances of this type in the future. This is what he told us:
“We look for ways to reach consumers and fans, while also being in places that make sense for the brand. For example, we chose CCXP this year because it is a pop culture training event. While what we sell are games, we also sell entertainment for people. This is the first one we have in Mexico, but we have participated in [la CCXP de] Brazil, as we know it. What we do is see if they fit into the strategy we have as a company and as a brand. As long as there is not something like this massive, we will continue doing smaller events, but we always want to be close to the fan, so we do events with fans or with the press.”
Last but not least, Romina Whitlock spoke to us about how important the impact that Mexico has had on Switch game sales and its games. This is what he told us:
“I can tell you that all Mario games, or Mario family games, do very well in Mexico. The Switch’s installed base has grown more and more. When a game like Pikmin 4 comes out, for example, you’re starting with a larger installed base, so there’s more opportunity for growth and success. “We are very fortunate to be in the position we are in in Mexico.”
It is clear that Nintendo is an extremely important country for Nintendo in the Latin American region, but we are still far from seeing a Nintendo of Mexico, for example. Instead, the company will focus on increasing its position through activations, such as those that are sure to happen with games like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2. On related topics, a new Nintendo World Championships is on the way. Likewise, you can learn more about Nintendo’s presence at CCXP in our coverage of the event.
Author’s Note:
While it seems that Nintendo will only hold such an event again if another CCXP takes place in Mexico, the appearance of the Big N at this celebration is a positive thing, and makes it clear that the company is willing to give the fans of our country the experiences they long for, as long as they have the right place to do them.
