Many people do not think about the danger of fires in homes, even for a short period, after they are outside. Canada’s ON Better Living website offers some advice on what you can do to prevent a fire.
– Do not leave the stove burning without attention, as you must stay in the kitchen while cooking, and if you have to leave, turn off the stove. As for cooking food over low heat, make sure to follow it regularly.
- Keep cooking areas clean and tidy, and keep combustible items such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, and paper towels a safe distance away from a burning stove.
– Be prepared in case of a fire, and keep a lid near you while cooking to use it to put out the fire if a small fire breaks out.
– Be sure to handle candles carefully, never leave them unattended and keep them at least 30 centimeters away from anything that can burn such as fabrics and wood.
– Ensure that smoke alarms are working, as they must be cleaned of dust and tested every month.
