The first season of “House of the dragon” came to an end with a high dose of drama. The Targaryen House will start a civil war and the 13 dragons of the series will start fighting. Based on the above, something that has drawn a lot of attention is the relationship between the flying beasts and their respective riders, something that began long before the story that adapts the HBO Max series and that is mentioned in a scene from “Game of thrones”.
This is a scene that takes place in the Chapter 7 of the second season of “Game of thrones”. In it, we see an important conversation between Arya Stark and Tiwyn Lannister.
Aegon ‘The Conqueror’ and the burning of Harrenhal
Tiwyn explains to the minor that during the time of the Conquest, Aegon ‘The Conqueror’ rode Balerion (the largest dragon in all of history) and destroyed the great fortress of Harrenhal after Harren ‘the Black’ refused to join the Targaryens.
“Harren and his children burned alive within these walls. Aegon Targaryen changed the rules, that’s why every living thing knows his name 300 years after his death”, mentions the eldest of the Lannister house.
But Arya, who knows history from her father Ned Stark, tells her something important: “Aegon and his sisters. It wasn’t just Aegon riding his dragon, it was Rhaenys and Visenya as well.”.
This refers to the story of Aegon ‘The Conqueror’who married his two sisters: Rhaenys, who rode Meraxes, and Visenya, who rode Vhagar (the biggest dragon we see in “House of the dragon”).
The Targaryen myth and the dragons
The burning of Harrenhal marked a before and after. The place was the largest fortress in all of Westeros, with large towers and up to 35 halls. It was built to withstand ground attacks of up to 1 million men.
But when Aegon mounted Balerion and went to the castle, burned it down so easily that the message was clear: to go against a Targaryen riding his dragon is to dig your own grave.
Thus, during the war of conquest‘The Conqueror’ managed to unite the seven kingdoms and founded the Red Keep, where he named King’s Landing as his capital.
