New rules, new uncertainties. The three-day test just ended ushered in a new technological chapter for Formula 1, providing first impressions of these new cars. Everyone’s attention was obviously focused on understanding who did the best job in the factory in the last two years, even if the main goal of all the teams was to understand the actual correlation between the computer data and those of the runway. We tried to understand and interpret their feelings, those of the drivers, to analyze the behavior on the track, but Formula 1 is also made up of numbers and times, which is the only real element that counts for being the fastest and most reliable. of the others.
So let’s try to put together all the “cards” of the Catalan shakedown, aware however that it is still too early to draw a final balance and extract a scale of values before the second test and the first race scheduled in Bahrain. It is a bit like reading the cards or the palm of your hand trying to predict the future, but also a starting point that already projects us towards Sakhir.

Already from this first ranking, which brings together the best times of all three days, you can see how the teams have done completely different jobs. Only the two Mercedes of Hamilton and Russell and Vettel’s Aston Martin used the softer compound of the Pirelli range to print their absolute best time, while the others remained one or – in some cases – two steps behind. It is also difficult to assess the extent of the gaps, also considering the natural evolution of the track during the session (not everyone tried a sort of time attack on the last day available).

On the reliability front, Ferrari stands out, the only one not to have encountered particular problems in the three days and to have gone beyond the 400 laps covered and the 2000 kilometers completed. A good sign for the Maranello technicians, who will now be able to concentrate with more serenity on perfecting the set-up and on new technical solutions to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the F1-75 above all. Mercedes and McLaren are also doing well from this point of view, while the other two Ferrari powered cars are sinning: Alfa Romeo and Haas. Alpine also suffered a lot, especially on the last day with the problem in the morning that stopped Alonso and Ocon’s activity prematurely.
