It continues unabated back and forth between Toto Wolff and Christian Hornerfueled by the market entanglements that seem to link the destinies of Mercedes and Red Bull, not only with regards to future of Max Verstappen. The announcement of Adrian Newey’s farewell to the Milton Keynes team was commented by Wolff and also by McLaren CEO Zak Brown with a certain ill-concealed satisfaction. Both had underlined that they had seen “many curriculaa” starting from Red Bull in the direction of their respective teams.
Horner waited until the end of the Miami GP to respond to his two colleagues, focusing in particular on Wolff, with whom the rivalry that exploded in 2021 seems to have been anything but dormant by time and the difference in performances shown by the two teams in recent years.
Horner’s reply
“You know the two figures involved – commented Horner, referring to Brown and Wolff – they talk a lot. I don’t intend to get dragged into a controversy, but if I were Toto I would focus more on the problems he is having. I’m not worried about our strength and the depth of the team. Of course there will always be movements between the teams.”.
Then the final thrust: “At Mercedes we took 220 people away from HPP [Mercedes High Performance Powertrains] at Red Bull Powertrains, so when we’re talking about losing people I’d be more worried about losing 200 than one or two.“, commented Horner. Also on the possible farewell by Jonathan Wheatley, current sporting director of Red Bull, Horner did not appear worried: “There are rumors about everyone. Contract terms and conditions are not something we talk about in public“, he ruled.
