With a post directly on the PlayStation blog, Guerrilla unveils the first outpost of Horizon Forbidden West, along with lots of news about the world and its background, including the process that led to the creation of the non-playable characters. All these new features will make the title incredibly alive and always different.
After the details revealed earlier this month, Guerrilla describes the creative process that led to the creation of the outposts, in particular focusing on the first one we are going to meet during the adventure. Precisely regarding this Espen Sogn, lead designer of the Living Word team, describes the feeling that players will have in front of the first city:
When walking in the Forbidden West, everything should feel like it belongs there. Guerrilla’s Living World team works on the aspects of the game that make the world feel authentic and alive: the tribes, the settlements and the people within them. There is an intention behind everything we put into the world.
Particular attention has been given to the tribes that populate the entire map, through details that highlight the characteristics that distinguish them from others, giving us the feeling of a living world. Annie Kitain, senior writer within Guerrilla, describes the relationship between the various teams working on the game as follows:
Ultimately, our goal is to make NPCs feel connected to where they live, and we work closely with other in-house teams, such as Narrative, Quest, and Environment, to make sure each place is authentic.

Regarding the presence of NPCs, non-playable characters, within the story and the world, Sogn states:
Every non-combat NPC in Horizon Forbidden West is part of a crowd system, within this system, rules such as reactions, walk paths and other animations can be created. Then we also have the attitude system, which determines a personality. This means that we can create unique people who behave as individuals within the world.
These present are just some of the many innovations introduced on Horizon Forbidden West, whose release date is scheduled for February 18, 2022, after a window initially scheduled for this year.
