Known as a Chinese critic, 74-year-old Laita was accused of holding a memorial service last year after authorities had blocked the gathering citing the coronavirus. Lai has denied his guilt. In total, more than 20 people have been charged.
Lai has been imprisoned. He is also accused of violating security laws, among other things.
The law-owned pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily was forced to close in June when its funds were frozen.
