We figured out what surface materials and what kind of rugs to choose if you want to get into cleaning your home with ease. Advice is provided by the cleaner Auri Kananen and experts from the Marttaliitto and the Allergy, Skin and Asthma Association.

Multi wants to get away from cleaning the home with ease, rather than rubbing stubborn dirt off the walls of the shower cubicle and washing the seams of the kitchen tiles over and over again.

We asked the experts what surface materials and what kind of rugs to choose for your home to make cleaning easy and smooth.

A professional cleaner known on social media Auri KananenSpecialist in the Allergy, Skin and Asthma Association Katariina IjäsDirector of Counseling at Marttaliitto Teija Jerkku and a household expert at Martta in Pirkanmaa Eija Kalliojärvi tell about materials and carpets.

1. Laminate flooring

From floor materials Auri Kananen’s favorite is laminate, which is “super easy”.

“If we talk about cleanability alone, then laminate is the best. But the laminate has a lot of other bad properties, ”says Kananen.

With laminate, special care must be taken not to use too much water.

Marttaliitto Jerkku emphasizes that the laminate floor is quickly damaged by the abundant use of water. Therefore, wipe it only with a damp mop or cloth.

2. Flat walls

In wall materials the most important thing is evenness. When choosing between wallpaper and paint, Kananen flags for a painted wall.

“If something is spilled on the killer, it can’t be washed. All dirt can be removed from the white painted surface with a cleaning stone. ”

Kananen states that completely white walls can look barren, but they are the easiest to clean.

Jerkku says the painted walls can be wiped with a damp cloth. Paint also matters.

“The brighter and harder the paint surface, the easier it is to clean and the better it can withstand cleaning. If the paint surface is chalky and there is paint left on the finger when wiping it off, the surface cannot be washed, ”says Jerkku.

3. Kitchen with steel and hard tops

Uniformity is also a trump card in the kitchen walls.

Before the mere tile was installed in the intermediate space of the kitchen, ie on the wall above the stove and the sink. Now the options are glass, plexiglass and microcement, among others.

Kalliojärvi Marto states that a seamless plate solution is easier to keep clean.

According to Kananen, kitchen countertops, on the other hand, should be made of hard material that does not absorb anything.

“Wood is hard if it gets wet often. The stone level is good. The laminate will work, as long as there is no water left in it for a long time. ”

Kananen would not use composite as the material for the sink, as it will stain and cannot withstand very strong detergents.

“The steel sink is the easiest of all to clean,” says the cleaning guru.

Kananen does not take a stand on the material of the cabinet doors, but the surfaces should be flat. Of the colors, he advises avoiding matte black, as it shows the most greasy fingerprints.

4. The shower curtain wins in the ease of the shower cubicle

The bathroom for walls and floors, household expert Kalliojärvi recommends large tiles to reduce the number of seams.

“The seams are sensitive to chemicals and collect dirt.”

Limescale deposits on the bathroom floor will not be visible if the floor is light. They are in themselves just a disadvantage of appearance.

“Admittedly, if there is a lot of lime on the floor, as a rough spot, it collects grease and other dirt.”

Cleaner from the point of view of the shower curtain is more effortless than the doors around the shower room, from which lime and other stains have to be washed.

Kalliojärvi advises you to choose a shower curtain that can be washed in the washing machine. In addition, the shower curtain should not be left in the bundle after the shower but should be allowed to air dry.

Outside the bathroom threshold, Kalliojärvi recommends placing a rug on which to dry your feet so that moisture does not transfer to other floors in the apartment.

5. Lightweight and dense cotton rug

So cleaning would be easy, Katariina Ijäs, an expert in the Allergy, Skin and Asthma Association, advises getting a tightly woven rug because it is easy to vacuum.

“The more fluffy or long-threaded the carpet, the more it collects dust and the harder it is to vacuum,” Ijäs says.

According to Jerku, you should avoid carpets with fringes, embossing or embellishments for cleaning.

Also Auri Kananen states that the carpet, which is easy to clean, has a smooth surface and is smooth.

“A really densely woven and thin rug is best. It can be taken with a sharp dryer quickly. If the carpet can be lifted with one hand, then it is easy to clean. I wipe the carpet with a dryer, then lift and pull under the carpet with a dryer, ”says Kananen.

Kananen does not consider the rag rug easy to care for.

“The rag rug is annoying to clean. It is not tightly woven, but it goes into the vacuum cleaner and is a knot. ”

Woven carpets are the easiest carpets in the sense that they can be washed in the automatic laundry and dry faster than wool carpets, for example.

The woven paper towel mat cannot be washed yourself, but must be taken to a laundry for a professional to wash.

Similarly, a woven woolen wool would be washed by a professional because wool is a delicate material. The good side of wool is that wool as a material repels dirt.

As a vestibule, Katariina Ijäs suggests getting a rug made of artificial material.

“They provide a dense, durable and easy-to-clean carpet,” says Ijäs.

6. Less stuff, easier to clean

Finally Auri Kananen reminds that in general, the amount of goods has the greatest effect on cleanability.

“If there’s a lot of stuff, it shouldn’t be cleaned up.”

Cleaning is much easier when the goods are scarce and in good order.
