Having just completed their long strike of several months, Hollywood actors gathered this Saturday for the prestigious Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), in what is expected to be another great night for “Oppenheimer” in the run-up to the Oscars.
The 30th edition of the awards granted by the actors union became the first broadcast by Netflix, platform with 260 million subscribers, which will probably increase the audience and prestige of an event considered an important indicator for the Oscars, which this year are awarded on March 10.

The atmosphere was festive and the members of SAG-AFTRA
(the union that represents some 120,000 artists, including A-list stars) gathered en masse for the first time since striking major deals with studios like Disney and Netflix.
“It is especially meaningful to be here with all of us for this occasion, after going through a very difficult time with the strike,” said actor Idris Elba when opening the gala.
“I want to take this moment to honor and thank all of you, both those who are here and those watching from home, who have shown solidarity and supported SAG-AFTRA,” he said.
“Oppenheimer” night
The actors in “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan's film about the father of the atomic bomb that has so far dominated Hollywood's awards season, are likely to get a good harvest.
The film, which has won important awards at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the DGA Awards and the British Bafta Awards, is the favorite to win the most coveted award: Best Acting Cast.
In recent years, “Parasites” (2020), “CODA” (2022) and “Everything everywhere at the same time” (2023) added a victory in that category and an Oscar for best film.
Many of the same actors who vote for the SAG Awards are part of the larger bloc of Oscar voters.
The biggest competition “Oppenheimer” finds in this category will come from “Barbie,” “Killers on the Moon,” “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple.”
For the best actress award there will be an expected duel between Emma Stone (“Poor Creatures”) and Lily Gladstone (“The Moon Killers”) and among the men the favorites are Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Paul Giamatti (” “Those who stay”).
As is often the case since the start of the awards season, the trophies for best supporting actor and actress should not escape Da'Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) and Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”).
A Life of Streisand
The night also honors television. The final season of “Succession” dominates the drama nominations, while “The Bear” took the first comedy wins for its leads Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri.
Among the presenters of the gala will also be Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Billie Eilish.
Singer and actress Barbra Streisand, who has been busy promoting her recent memoir “My Name is Barbra,” will receive a lifetime achievement award from Jennifer Aniston.
This agreement with the SAG Awards marks the first time that Netflixwhich has cautiously entered the world of live events, hosts a Hollywood awards gala.
“I can't wait to get home and Netflix recommended this show to me based on all the other things I've seen myself in,” Elba joked.
