Mr. Rhein, if you had to describe yourself with three qualities, what would they be?
Difficult question. I would say: loyal, reliable, disciplined.
You joined the Junge Union at the age of 14, were a member of the state parliament at 27, chairman of the Frankfurt CDU at 36, state secretary at 37, minister of the interior of Hesse at 38, and minister of science at 42. At 47 President of the State Parliament, by far the youngest in the history of Hesse, unanimously elected, at 50 Prime Minister. What qualities do you need for such a career?
First of all, you should definitely not draw up a career plan – that would never work. I didn’t have such a plan at all. My professional goal was to be a criminal defense lawyer, and my greatest political ambition was to be a city councilman. But that was not possible in the power structures of the CDU at the time, young people still had no chance. Only Markus Frank, Uwe Becker, Thomas Schäfer, Peter Beuth, I and others in the Junge Union made sure that representatives of the JU got promising places on the CDU lists for local elections and still get them today.
